It’s hard to believe that we are still in the winter season, considering that we haven’t seen much snow this year. However, this warm weather should remind you that spring is fast approaching, bringing a number of homeowner concerns with it. Before you start your annual spring cleaning, here are a number of things you can do to prepare your house for April showers and May flowers:
Save Energy – Go through all of the lamps in your home and replace your outdated light bulbs with fluorescent bulbs, which aren’t only good for the environment, but are also good for your electric bill. They last longer than halogen bulbs too!
Fire Readiness – Test your smoke detectors and replace the batteries if it has been six months since you last checked. Also, replace any older fire extinguishers with newer models and place them in easily accessible areas. You don’t want to be caught off-guard in an emergency.
Keep It Cool – Before the really hot weather arrives, have your home’s central air or air conditioner inspected by a professional. If any repairs need to be made, have them done as soon as possible. Don’t get stuck in the heat!
Washed – Start a new habit by cleaning around and under your laundry machines. Also, turn off the water when not in use. This can stop a small leak from becoming big and save a little on your water bill.
Sure Footing – Check your home’s walkways or footpaths to make sure that they haven’t been displaced due to rain or other water damage. Also check to see if your driveway has cracked in any areas due to the cold. These can cause a trip and fall hazard.

Unfortunately, if you have to move into a nursing home or assisted living community, the costs can be astronomical, especially if you live in Connecticut. A recent 2011 survey placed CT’s nursing home costs 81% higher than the median cost across the country. Can you afford $140,000 a year based on your retirement funds alone?
In this uncertain economy, starting a business can be a frightening and sometimes overwhelming prospect. For this reason, many entrepreneurs have started looking into working from their homes, cutting down on the costs of leasing or renting office space. This type of practice has extended from day care providers all the way to accountants, but one thing remains the same – business insurance is still needed, even if yours is based at home.

The sun has been shining and even though it’s a bit cold, I’m sure a lot of you are thinking about getting your hot rods, muscle cars and other antique vehicles back on the road.
Now that the holiday gift-giving season is a memory, it is definitely a good time to assess all of the new items in your home. The number of items may be exponential to what you already have, especially if you have children who received a lot of presents. Considering these additions to your home, it is a good time to take a look at your home inventory, especially if you don’t already have one.
With winter rolling into Connecticut after stalling for some weeks, you’re probably not thinking about the boating you’ll be doing this spring. Even though it may be pretty cold in CT, it’s time to start gearing up your boat and/or personal watercrafts for the better weather. Here’s how to prep your boat for the water.

The holiday season has come and gone, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t still some excitement in the air. Every year during the holidays, thousands of couples choose to spend the rest of their lives together. In fact, 2011 saw the number of marriages rise due to a number of factors, including the legalization of gay marriages in New York. If you just got engaged or have been for a while, there is something you may not have thought of amongst your wedding planning – how is your insurance going to change?
Winter is a very fickle time of year, especially in the Northeast. You can always be sure to see some amount of snow, ice and other nasty winter weather, but you can never be sure exactly how much of a hassle it will be. One thing is for sure though – if there is a few feet of snow on the ground when it starts to warm up, water is going to be everywhere. As you consider how the meltdown is going to affect you and your business, you need to remember how to deal with ice dams – which are sure to start forming during this time.
